EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

February 14, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Vice President Ron Banner, Jim Lazarus, Amber Lee, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Laura Spence. Executive Board members John Forstrom, Merodie Gentile, Marvin Jones, and Mark Robinson were absent. Twenty-seven additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported the membership status: 41 renewal reminder letters were mailed in January, costing less than $25. Seventeen renewals have been received, as well as nine new members. Current membership is now 227.

Treasurer Laura Spence reported a balance of $2,775.71 in the checking account.

Mark Hungerford, Long Beach Community Planner, introduced a video presentation of the updating of the city's SEADIP document, which is now in progress. SEADIP is the Southeast Area Development and Improvement Plan, the regulation which prescribes and governs the zoning and development of the region. Following the video, Angela Reynolds, Comprehensive Planning Officer, answered questions from the audience.

Kymberly Cloughesy, LBPD Public Services Specialist for the East Division, spoke about criminal activity in the neighborhood, noting that property crimes in the East Division have decreased in number. She was questioned about several specific incidents recently, including burglaries at a residence and at Body O' Soul, a retail business on Second Street. A request was made for the Police Department to place crime statistics on the city web site.

Jeanette Gavin, the BSRA representative on the Parking Commission, reported the current activities of the commission: Ballots have been sent for businesses to vote on the assessment for alley repairs. Several items in progress are Second Street median landscaping, sidewalk "no bicycles" signage, converting red curbs to parking, gateway signage, and replacement of damaged newspaper boxes. There was a discussion of the possibility of the city's Passport bus being used as a shuttle to beach parking lots.

President Mike Ruehle announced the resignation of Nancy Buchanan from the Executive Board. Secretary Jeff Miller explained the process to fill a vacancy and nominated Heather Altman to the position. Ms. Altman spoke briefly and received endorsements from several audience members. Ruehle asked for an informal vote of approval by the audience, which was clearly given. The Executive Board appointed Ms. Altman by unanimous vote.

President Mike Ruehle explained the recent BSRA survey concerning proposed zoning changes. All eleven proposed changes were supported by those responding.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported the status of the Cabo Cantina property: A building permit was issued December 19, but no visible work has been done. A replacement awning over the patio is expected to be built. The "Belmont Grill" side is open for business, as of January 4. They are operating under a conditional business license issued January 8. A copy of the license has been obtained with a written Public Records Act request.

President Mike Ruehle described the city's beach development presentation he viewed at the Belmont Heights Residents Association recently. It was a more detailed version of the presentation at our meeting last month. Ruehle announced the BSRA survey sent to residents yesterday concerning the beach development. Brief discussion followed.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 pm.
